This was in no way, shape, or form meant to be like BoB. If you have studied WW2 at all, you would know that the war in the Pacific was a totally different war than the European theater.

I loved Band of Brothers, it was a great and realistic series of the harsh realities of warfare and the scars it can leave.

The Pacific was much harder to watch than BoB ever was. BoB was all about the bonds formed in combat and how this can tear people apart.

This grim series displayed how completely unprepared the US military was mentally for how truly horrific this war would be.

Not only were you fighting the unpredictable and relentless Japanese soldiers, but you were also fighting the terrain.

The dense woods, the heavy rain, the thick mud. Not to mention all the diseases that came with these harsh conditions.

Water was a luxury in a lot of situations. The filmmakers brilliantly showed how this affected the fighting men, who became virtually hollow shells, their sanity teetering on the edge of their knives.

The Japanese killed everyone without remorse. One particular scene that gave me chills to witness was in the latter half of the series when a group of civilians was slaughtered by a Japanese machine gun nest while running to the American forces.

One person, a child, started to crawl slowly to the lines, a couple bullet wounds on his body. One of the combat rookies wanted to run in to help the poor boy, but was kept back so they would not be shoot too.

All the Marines could do was watch, as the helpless child was brutally killed after a bullet from that machine gun emplacement hit him in the back of the head and his body went limp instantaneously.

This is on par with Saving Private Ryan, another collaboration between Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, as one of the most horrific, gruesome, and realistic war dramas ever put to film.

I highly recommend giving it a watch, but be warned: this series is not for the faint of heart. Sign In. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends.

It is not light entertainment but an excellent representation of what it must have been like. I also learnt things about that time I did not know.

This set is "a keeper" and I will watch it again at some point. Such a great series. It is stunningly beautiful at times and then so brutally honest in its portrayal of war at others.

The main thing that I love about this show is the way that it isn't just about guns and shooting things, but is about the characters.

You really get to know the characters personally, and you feel for them as they are experiencing the horrors of the war.

Without the characters being so loveable, even once they are hardened by war and relatable this show would be no where near as good.

Really authentic and believable tv show in every aspect. You don't feel like the costumes aren't done well or that the emotions are faked, you believe it and you feel like you are right there with them.

The sense of brother hood and loyalty in battle is another strong point of The Pacific. Overly, very honest and fantastic acting.

Buy it! Watch it! You won't be sorry. One person found this helpful. As with "Band of Brothers" I found this series difficult to get into - probably more so because the series immediately pitches into the vicious battle of Guadalcanal and there is little time to get acquainted with the characters.

The third episode, set during a moment of respite in Australia, remedies this and from this point I found the series increasingly gripping.

The fragmented, and sometimes pointless, nature of the Pacific campaign means that this series is perhaps even more character driven than "Band of Brothers" with its Normandy to Germany narrative arc.

In some ways this makes it easier to relate to as it focuses principally on just three marines: Leckie, Basilone and Sledge. On the other hand the brutality of the Pacific fighting, the underlying racism of the conflict and the marines culture of taking no prisoners leavens our thinking about these people and poses back to the viewer the uncomfortable question of how we would behave if we had to courage to face similar circumstances.

Consequently the series avoids jingoism and mock heroism. The combat sequences are terrifying rather than exciting and the overall tone is sorrowful rather than celebratory.

It raises difficult issues and does not provide comforting answers. It is quite simply a masterpiece. After watching Band of brothers I was a little bit disappointed in The Pacific the 1st time around but now that I had chance to watch it again it was really quite good the action scenes are really graphic where band of brothers concentrated on the men only The Pacific gives you a little bit of insight into the background of the characters good series worth a second go.

Load more international reviews. There's not much I can say about The Pacific that hasn't already been said, it's just amazing.

If you love history of war and especially WW2 then it's a must have, no doubt about it. But if you're not usually a fan of war films and think this is just another war film then think again!

I've watched this with family and friends who know very little of the war and don't particularly like war films, but were blown away by this show.

It's more than guns and explosions, it tells a story, a real story about possibly the most important historical moment in the history of mankind.

It's something we all need to watch, to understand the sacrifices these men gave. It wasn't so long ago, we still have family members alive who fought in this war and it's something we can't ever afford to let us forget.

I initially had reservations about watching 'The Pacific' due to negative posts comparing it to the excellent 'Band of Brothers'.

I admittedly didn't give it the time of day when it was first aired on British television but that was only because of the adverts spoiling the continuity.

I'm only up to episode 5 at the moment and can honestly say I'm glad I didn't let the negatives put me off.

So far I've enjoyed this series just as much and it certainly gives you the impetus to look into the historical details and the individuals portrayed in the series.

One poster had mentioned it was 'too dark' which I can only assume he watched the whole thing outside in bright sunlight or something.

A few battle scenes are set at night time and from a historical standpoint you wouldn't want it any other way.

I've been watching this on a Sony Bravia 50W with Sennheiser HDR headphones and I can safely say it's an experience to behold especially on blu-ray.

The Peleliu beech landing scene and subsequent attack had me flinching and ducking for cover along with the Marines struggling to gain a foothold on the Island - heart-pounding stuff.

The quieter scenes in between focus on the individual stories of the young men involved and let you catch your breath before the inevitable build-up to another battle.

You don't feel like you're watching a TV series at all and just like 'Band of Brothers' has that gritty 'Saving Private Ryan' film quality about it that puts you right in the action.

Well done to everyone involved with the making of it. If this is as good as it's predecessors then we are in for a real treat.

Superb show and a great quality bluray, really puts you in the midst of war, this time in the Pacific. Superb gritty visuals, are followed up with excellent audio, makes you feel part of the harrowing reality that is world war 2.

Yet again HBO comes out with a great miniseries, which is related to the Band Of Brothers -- though only by being a war series.

The Pacific shows the war against the japanese whereas "BoB" showed battles from Europe. While a nice one to watch through, it felt at some points like a show that just skipped.

Like the editing in some of the episodes made the scenes detached from one another and as though not directly following the happenings of a a scene right before it.

The characters and their fates were moving, but only to some degree as The Pacific did not really drill into their profiles that deeply and you only started to remember characters' names halfway of the total episode count.

The special effects were totally awesome. Having seen Band Of Brothers, held off purchasing this set, thinking it would be a let down, wrong!.

Brilliant from start to finish. The quality of production every bit as good as Band, story lines never fade away, in fact they get better.

Acting top notch. Of course, very thought provoking as it should be. What lucky lives we all now have following these harrowing experiences.

Fantastic set, highly recommended. I love war films and this has added bonuses of maps and interviews about the areas in which the marines fought.

HBO have done very well with these two series, they both offer different views of the war with Pacific having a bit more down time for the characters having interaction with love interests and family.

Some of it was a bit obvious and I wont say as it will spoil the film but I could see what was going to happen to one of the main characters.

Given five stars as I love it and its easy to put down and pick up as it was a series instead of a long film. I cant rate this series high enough.

I thought it was outstanding on all levels. I own "band of brothers" on the same format but they are not alike. They are both equally as good but both offer a something different.

One way to explain it would be this - "Band of brothers" is fighting the most part and then toward the end chills out and deals with the aftermath.
